WeVerify at Truth and Trust Online

On the 4th and 5th of October 2019, WeVerify members participated in the first Truth and Trust Online conference (TTO) in London, UK. TTO is an initiative involving academics, fact checkers, journalists and industry focusing on promoting the discussion around topics related to online misinformation. Kalina Bontcheva (USFD) was part of the organising committee that also included representatives from Full Fact, Facebook, Google, UCL, Microsoft, Twitter, Alan Turing Institute, Mumsnet, Amazon, AI Foundation, Wikimedia, MIT and University of Cambridge.

During these two days, experts from different disciplines presented their work, providing a very friendly environment for idea sharing and potential collaborations. The most interesting aspect of this conference was the diversity of its programme. The talks covered not only technical activities, but also social and psychological aspects of online misinformation.

WeVerify participated in the conference with a poster presenting the current results of the project, in particular:

  • Content and source verification in social media;
  • Analysis of disinformation flows;
  • Tools for debunking disinformation;
  • Database of known fakes.

Olga Papadopoulou (CERTH), Danae Tsabouraki (ATC), Zlatina Marinova (Ontotext) and Carolina Scarton (USFD) presented the poster. The poster session was very productive and we received a positive feedback from the participants. Participants were particularly interested in how the tools and resources are going to be made available, since these are highly important for research and industry purposes.

Ahmet Aker and Kalina Bontcheva also had a poster on Predicting News Source Credibility, that presented results likely to be incorporated in our WeVerify tools.

In summary, TTO was a very good conference and we are looking forward to next year’s edition.
